 | 05:47 pm - The world can be so cruel This entry is mostly for myself, just so I can remember the Rob Thomas concert I attended this past Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 at the legendary Beacon Theater. This was the second of three sold-out shows at the Beacon and if his management didn't add a third date, my show would have been the last show of the tour. Dammit. The setlist during my show and the last show were quite similar except for the addition of an acoustic performance of Downfall (!!!!). I would've loved to have heard that one live. I noticed that he didn't play a single matchbox twenty song during my show and I wish he'd have thrown in just one MBT song. I know I was waiting for it all night.

 | 04:12 pm - Hot Spots? Hi everyone,
My husband and I live in Michigan, but are thinking about relocating to Minneapolis. My parents live in Woodbury, so we'd like to be within a 30 minute drive of them.
I am wondering if you can tell me what the "trendiest" (I hate that description) areas are. I mean that in a general sense. I'm not looking for anyplace with specific types of people or anything. Just areas with a lot of activity (restaurants, bars, foot traffic etc...). My husband would be opening a private studio, and we are looking for someplace that would get good foot traffic, but also be somewhere that you'd want to drive over to (as the area would have offerings for you while you were visiting).
I know this is vague, so thanks for any help you do give.

| 07:11 pm - Reviews: BEA 2009: Scott Westerfeld Booktalks Leviathan
http://www.unshelved.com/blog.aspx?post=1536 I was lucky enough to score a signed copy of Leviathan at BEA back in May. Bill immediately seized it so that he and his son (8) could read it together, but I've finally got it back and my daughter (7) and I are really enjoying it. (Yes, we know our kids aren't technically young adults yet, but the book is that good.)
If you haven't heard about Scott Westerfeld's amazing steampunk novel yet, if you haven't picked it up, don't take our word for it, watch Scott's pitch:

http://www.qwantz.com/index.php?comic=1593 | archive - contact - sexy exciting merchandise - search - about– | | | | ← previous | November 12th, 2009 | next | November 12th, 2009: It's not quite definitely not planning any crimes ever! #seriouslyyouguys, but Rodney Bradford's Facebook status update of "Where's my pancakes" successfully acted as an alibi against a charge of robbery! Awesome, Rodney Bradford! He wasn't out robbing people because he was at home wondering where his pancakes were.
But as that article goes on, it slides deep into "oh man OLD PEOPLE STEREOTYPES" territory. Joseph Pollini, who otherwise sounds awesome because he lists "hostage negotiation" as his primary area of expertise, says that teenage HACKERS could have posted that pancake-centric Facebook update to Rodney's profile while posing as Rodney at his home computer, while Rodney was actually out busy robbing at the time - which, you know, is possible? But it's not very likely, and it takes some knowledge. No problem, says Joseph! Teenagers are really good at internet, because "they use it all the time". "They [teenagers!] could develop an alibi. They watch television, the movies, there is a multitude of reasons why someone of that age would have the knowledge to do a crime like that."
Is it the "the" he puts in front of "movies" that is so terrible? Is it that he believes you can get better at computers in real life by watching an actor on TV sit down in front of a monitor, a monitor so bright it projects legible text onto his face, cracking his knuckles before saying "Let's get cyber" - is that what's so terrible? Perhaps he believes that all digital photographs can be enhanced to reveal any face via the "ENHANCE" button that true hackers have access to, and that when such a hacker is faced with a screen full of the words "ACCESS DENIED" in a blinking red font while a siren goes off and laughing skulls spin in the background, they need only hit the "OVERRIDE" button.
Anyway! Where's my pancakes
UPDATE: Michael let me know that the New York Times ain't so dang reliable, the update made by Rodney didn't say "Where's my pancakes", it said "ON THE PHONE WITH THIS FAT CHICK......WHERER MY IHOP."
Guys that is so much better, this story is amazing. – Ryan |

| 11:24 pm - Gene's life: Last week on the road
http://www.unshelved.com/blog.aspx?post=1535 My first week full-time on Unshelved we spoke in 4 venues (California Library Association, Ingram's booth at AASL in Charlotte, the University of NC, and the University of SC (Go Cocks!)). It was a great but exhausting week, with an extreme low point (my daughter being stung by a stingray at Huntington Beach (she's fine now)) and a fabulous highlight (being given the art below by Sarah Dutton, a fan who came out to see us with her parents in NC).
I missed the SoCo shots at Charlotte's Hooters, but did visit ImaginOn again, saw the ImaginOn sandwich menu at the supermarket next door, and then scored an ARC of the new Joe Sacco book at AASL. (If you're ever in that part of NC, try the lamb tibs at the Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant -- thanks to Michael Rockliff at Workman for discovering it and leading the way!)
Survived 6 flights, if you count connecting flights (I do) and now I'm back in the big wet that is Seattle, fighting moss, a cat on my lap, seeing how much I can type before my wrists give out.
